Joshua Key (author of The Deserters Tale based on his deployment with the US army in Iraq in 2003, his subsequent desertion and refuge to Canada) spoke to WAM and a crowd of activists at the Dont Attack Iraq rally held by The Canadian Peace Alliance on October 25th, 2014. Joshua Key has witnessed crimes against humanity only further proven by Bradley Mannings leaks since Joshua Key first went into hiding in the US and escaped to Canada. He has a choice of either going back to the army or serving potentially decades in prison. Canada used to be welcoming to those that wanted to dodge overseas deployment, but no more. Key witnessed civilian murders, was ordered to basically terrorize homes with children in them. He watched other US soldiers kicking decapitated skulls around like soccer balls. He refused to take further part in such a disgusting practice. To have a choice between going back and dealing with more of that or going to prison is beyond what most people could possibly comprehend. Joshua Key made the selfless choice to go to prison rather than go to war.
