Journalists under fire by MDC-T Journalists in Zimbabwe are under siege by MDC-T. Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai hurled insults to journalists in public at a rally. That was a spring board upon which incessant harassment of journalists began to unfold. Tendai Biti. the finance minister, shouted obscenities full of hard-core vulgar to the ZiFM radio journalist, Garikai Fadzi, when he was pursuing a running story on Biti in which he is suspected to have embezzled US $ 50 000 Constituency Development Funds. Harare residents are furious over misappropriation of that money by Biti in his capacity as their Member of Parliament (MP) for Harare East. James Maridhadhi, a former ZBC junior 3 DJ threatened ZBC News crew who were covering news in Mabvuku constituency where he is an aspiring parliamentary candidate. He shouted them in public that days were numbered for some of them. He said his MDC-T had a clear list of who should remain or leave the broadcasting centre as soon as they win the forthcoming polls. Maridhadhi has personal vendettas with ZBC which he wishes to resolve using his political muscles. Maridhadhi is a little educated figure who does not have 5 O levels. He nearly failed to join government as a civil servant upon inception of the inclusive government when he came in as the first spokesperson for Prime Minister Tsvangirai. The then Public Service Minister Professor Elphus Mukonoweshuro came to his rescue by relaxing employment requirements from 5 O levels to grade 7 and attempted O level. He was fired from Prime Minister’s Office due to an acute deficit in competence. My advice to members of the journalism fraternity is that, exercise caution when dealing with MDC-T members, as you risky harm! But I say allow media to play its pivotal “watchdog role”!
