Journey in John 17:1-26 This final public prayer of Jesus is recorded as He is about to leave this world. He had not used His authority to serve Himself, but to honor His Father and serve those God gave Him. Jesus gave God’s people the life He received and is realized by knowing the Father based on the His work (1-5). His ministry originated from His Father to the disciples the Father had given Him (6-8). He did not seek to exalt Himself. Every word He spoke was from faithfulness to His Father for the fruitfulness of His disciples. At a time when they were about to abandon Him, Jesus did not focused on His loss but entrusted them to His Father to whom they truly belong (9-12). His concern was for their well being, not for their love and acceptance. Jesus prayer reveals He spoke to them not to impress them but to equip them with His joy (13). He gives them His Father’s word which causes this world to hate them for they no longer belong to it. This word of truth will set them apart from the world [sanctify], protect them from the evil of the world and equip them to be sent into the world (14-19). Their ministry is a continuation of Jesus ministry (20-21). Jesus gave them the glory His Father had given Him to produce a unity realized in relationship with each other and God (22-24). This is not a negotiated unity from compromised relationships, but a unity emerging from submitted relationships to God and His Son! The purpose of this unity is to reveal God’s love to and through His children. It can only be obtained as we come into the relationship with God that Jesus both modeled and purchased for us. The love Jesus had from the Father before creation is now ours based on who He is and what He has done on the cross (25-26). This love flowing to us from unity with God and His son, brings us into a perfect unity with each other and reveals the Father’s love to the world!
