Journeying Together Day 41 (Day 35 excluding Feast Days) Blessing and Promise As Generational An incredibly important part of what we learn as we journey through this wilderness into our fruition is that blessings and promise are generational. Indeed all our notions that have anything to do with destiny, fate, fruition, purpose, time and their projects of wholeness and thriving involve the work of reconciling the generative tensions between past, present and future courageously and wisely. Promise is definitively generational. Frantz Fanon but it this way: Every generation out of relative obscurity must discover its purpose and fulfill it or betray it. This struggle to fulfill and this risk of betrayal is what every step in this journey is all about. Ultimately, the final stages of our transformation involve transmission and investment in the next generation who will fulfill the promise seminal in us in ways we can scarcely imagine but that are, somehow and mysteriously, dependent on our courage and faith. Harvests we are unlikely to see anywhere other than in our hearts and minds: Hopes that are the point of our strivings. In this same way we know that the obverse is true: Our betrayal of our purpose can make that harvest bitter and the ground of the promise land fallow. Betrayal has everything to do with fears dominion over our actions. It is not just about being afraid because we have fear as an endowment, just as we have love. What the wilderness teaches us is not how to eliminate fear but how to respond to it courageously and creatively, so that it becomes a tool of our faith. We learn in these final stages of our journeying together into promise how to innovatively respond to the crises of our moment. In some ways our best traditions serve to guide us even as we break the idolatrous dominion of their paradigms, their letter, as we fulfill their spirit. This is the rite of passage, this choice between betrayal and fulfillment. This stride into real greatness in service of love and hope. We must impart our best to our children, our mentees, our legatees. And we must accept their choices as free even while we seek to guide the wisdom of them. We will not always recognize their decisions as right. Here we lean heavily on wisdoms light but formidable touch to direct their creativity along the arch of justice and the other fruit of virtues internalized by sound example. Promise is generational. Blessings are generational. Hope is the thread that tethers generation to generation. And this fabric is the landscape of true promise.
