Judges 16:1-14; Acts 7:30-43; John 5:1-18 Samsons not a very admirable fellow. He never meets a fight he doesnt pick, or a woman he doesnt fall for in the most ridiculous and tawdry fashion imaginable. He bullies his parents into doing things they dont want to do, and allows himself to be nagged into doing things he knows are stupid and self-destructive. God lets Samson do great things despite that. Just like He lets David, Abraham and Paul, none of whom are admirable in many ways. Just like He can let you and me, if were striving to do His will. Its not whether were perfect, or strong, or talented, or saintly. Its whether were trying hard to become those things so that we can do what weve been called to do. Not what makes us look good, or feel good. Not what we want to do. What weve been called to do. What we were made to do. Samson wasnt built to be a Torah scholar of sublime insight. Paul wasnt built to knock down temples with his brawny shoulders. David wasnt built to do miracles, and Elijah wasnt built to write poems. All of us have a purpose, or two, or twenty. Things that only we can accomplish. And it requires some real insight to figure out what that might be, and then pursue it. If we have that kind of self-awareness, and that kind of purpose, then our weaknesses wont get in the way. Well live lives which are purposeful, and acceptable, despite our flaws. Our flaws are pathetic, but they dont define us. Unless, that is, we have no virtues, no purpose, which does define us.
