Judson Small, one of three lighthouse keeping brothers, was keeper at Deer Island Light in Boston Harbor in the 1920s. His brother, Tom Small, who was keeper at the Narrows Light when it burned down in 1929, became the keeper in 1931. While he was keeper, Tom Small had a pet that gained fame as the climbing cat of Deer Island Light. The historian Edward Rowe Snow reported that Smalls cat would leap into the water, emerge with a fish in its mouth, climb the ladder, and eat the fish.
