July 19, 2013 What’s your motive? Adekunle Akinleye The Word: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things SHALL be added unto you. (Matthew6:33) The Gist: Why do you pray to God? No seriously, take some time to think about that question before you answer… The question sounds out of place and I’m sure quite a number of people have their eyebrows up like, “what is he talking about?” but believe me, up until recently, I would have been raising an eyebrow at anyone who asks that kind of question; after all even kids know why we pray. But seriously, why do you pray and when do you pray? For a relationship or to receive something? Is it when you’re in trouble? In an emergency? When you’re forced to? When? I’m sure you’ll find so many definitions of prayer in the dictionary and many religious books, but prayer simply means communion with God. Prayer is to be used to build a relationship with God and believe me, when you are in a relationship with Him, you lack nothing. So it can be said that praying for things is putting the cart before the horse. ‘Seek ye first’ takes on a new meaning when we allow the words of that Scripture sink into our being. God wants us to seek Him then things will come our way, but most seek things with a mindset that those things will enhance their relationship with God. ‘If I can just be a little more settled, then I’d serve God better…’ Does that sound familiar? Well the good news is that above all, God wants, is pursuing a relationship with us. In fact He is chasing us and He isn’t going to stop until He catches us. Hallelujah! Don’t let your prayers become a religious act and works but rather let it be by grace, powered by God Himself. You cant “out-zeal” God so use His energy that cant be exhausted rather than yours that can wary you. After all even the throne room where we receive answers is accessed by grace.
