July 2 Blog: CHARLIE......... Charlie. Charlie’s leg. First of all, I would like to thank SO many of you for becoming ‘Charlie’s Angels’! The response has been overwhelming & continues to flow in. The love that has come his way - & our way – over the past few days, from all over this land & others across various seas & oceans is simply amazing. Tears come to my eyes every time I think about it. Now - we think we might have some fairly good news. Since we started him on enrofloxacin – a strong antibiotic - & have continued to work on his leg for at least two hours every day, the leg appears to be better. Not a lot better, but at least it’s stopped exploding & the incessant drainage appears to be lessening. Dr. Gryl was here, yesterday, to take ex-rays & ultrasounds of the leg. His second biopsy should be back in another couple of days. The results of the cultures that were taken could be back in a few days – or up to two weeks, depending……. She also probed the area where his leg is leaking - & cleaned it & believes that it’s really only a matter of the leg draining itself of fluid build-up. This just in! Dr. Gryl just called me with the results of the bone x-rays &, after a consultation with their head surgeon, informed me that Charlie’s bones are clean! YAY! I gotta say, I didn’t think there was any problems in his bones, but until you check EVERYTHING out, you just don’t know what you’re dealing with, right? And with Charlie, we’re going the whole nine. No question. The first of the cultures are back, too - & nothing seems amiss on that front, either! Yay! The ultrasounds showed absolutely no signs of ‘honeycombing’ – or, pockets of open spaces or subcutaneous tunneling. And that’s a real good thing. His new special leg wraps arrived in the mail this morning & I’ll use them when I wrap his leg this evening. Marti – my partner-in-crime & the woman that has been Charlie’s greatest savior - & I both agreed this morning that his leg looks better than it has in over a week. I always look on the optimistic side but Marti – being an emergency room critical care nurse by trade – looks at things from an often purely clinical nature. And she agreed with me. On Sunday, a wonderful woman named Kathy came out & performed Reiki on Charlie. Now, I don’t begin to understand Reiki, but I do know that it’s an energy thing. And it relaxes the body & the spirit so the body can help to rejuvenate itself. And when I looked over at them, Charlie’s head was down & he was yawning to beat the band! No complaints from him. Kathy said that she’ll be back, tomorrow, & again over the weekend. As you can see, this is an all-hands-on-deck situation. NOTHING will stop us from saving Charlie’s life. Nothing. We will go to the ends of the earth for the big guy. And we WILL win! As Dr. Rollins once told me when Heighten was fighting for his life, “Jim – We WIN these! We WIN these, son!” And, with all of you who have become ‘Charlie’s Angels’. And with vets from here to Davis, CA on board. And with Reiki experts. And with nursing experts. And with the help of the Creator & a whole lot of hot, hard work, we WILL save Charlie’s life. And we WILL look back on this, one day, & know that it is one of our greatest successes, ever. I know that. I just KNOW that! Oh – if you haven’t seen these two videos, please watch them……..they were done for Charlie. And I don’t even know what to say, other than, “Thank you, angels!” The first was done by the Faire Alexis…….one of our greatest volunteers, ever. When she heard about Charlie’s condition she was in London, on a work/study program. And she put this together in her hotel room, in the middle night. For Charlie. Here it is: youtube/watch?v=7eMTQWs0MVw The second one was done by our great friend, Diana Swens & features a song by the wonderful Eric Street Band. Here it is: youtube/watch?v=EREbelSfqws I gotta tell you, kids – I have never seen as much love & generosity & hard work as I’ve seen by guys like you over the past few days. You give me hope. Not only for my best friend, Charlie, but for the whole two-legged race. I am honored to know you & I am humbled by your presence. And I will be, forever. Charlie, on the other hand, says, “Uh – yeah, sure, Jimbo. Now – is that a carrot in your hand or are you just glad to see me?” That’s my boy! Go, Charlie!!!! Love you guys…….forever & a day. Peace. Out.
