July 23, 1:30 Room 209B, 8 Central, Mt. Sinai Hospital “Mrs. Cato, it’s not appendicitis, you have a clot behaving like an octopus with arms reaching in multiple directions and these kinds of clots are typically associated with people with Cancer or people with ports. Since you don’t have Cancer anymore, the clot was caused by your Port and it is causing the swelling and the pain. We are going to take the port out and that should reduce the swelling immediately and give you some pain relief. Now, since you did have Cancer and will have had a clot, you are more susceptible to forming another clot in the future. So you will get two injections a day for at least 30 days and maybe as long as 3 months as we work to break that clot up. Do you think you will be giving yourself the shots or maybe your husband can do that? Just let us know on that. So you are going to have the port removed today, actually right now. You look much better today, so let’s do this!” Wait a minute…wait a minute….wait a minute……!!!!! July 25 11:45 3rd Floor Exam Room, Ruttenbrg Treatment Center, Oncology “Dr. Holcomb before the port came out Dr. Gomez said that since I didn’t have Cancer anymore, you believe that the clot was formed by the port. That is correct. Sooooooo since I did have…….since I don’t have Cancer ANYMORE that would mean that no cancer showed up in the blood, x-ray, Ultrasound, MRI, or CT scan, so that would mean that there is no evidence of cancer and you can’t see any Cancer and you are not keeping an eye on something and that would mean that I no longer have cancer…..right now, I don’t have Cancer……..anymore……….? Yes, I am comfortable with that diagnosis.” Dr. Ronald Holcomb Professor and Director, Clinical Cancer Affairs, Mt. Sinai Medical Center Guess who is administering the twice daily shots and guess who humbly thanks him every time. This is how this week ended…..how the last 14 months, 12 days and 21 hours ended. More importantly this is how THIS part begins.
