July 27, 2014 Garrick F. James Wormley Jones-Negro of the Week Shout out to our brother, Lumumba Camara Abrafo, heres the Negro of the Week....his name is James Wormley Jones. Now, I realize that it must seem like I am picking on Black Cops right now...dont worry there are other professions to get to soon enough. I was first made aware of this brother in Tony Martins Race First and the UNIA and ACL papers (and the companion reader both edited by Robert Hill). Another great source is the book called Negro with a Hat, by Colin Grant. Mr. Jones was a member of the DC metropolitan police, who went off to join the army during World War 1. After the War ended, he went back to being a cop, eventually making detective.. He apparently caught the attention of the feds , namely that legendary enemy of African people and degenerate John Edgar Hoover, and was recruited to join the FBI. In fact, he is proudly mentioned on its website (link attached) as the first African-American to join its ranks a Special Agent. His first and only job at the Bureau was to infiltrate and report back on Black groups. It was the meteoric rise of the UNIA that got Hoover scrambling to smash it but before he could, he had to know all about it..from the inside out. Despite Wormelys light-skinned appearance (which worried several members and delegates he interacted with), he was actually able to climb up the ranks relatively quickly. At one point, he became what we would probably call today Chief Information Officer and it was his reports back to his masters at the Justice Department that eventually led to the mail fraud charges that ultimately brought Garvey down (charges of tax fraud were ultimately dropped...he was convicted, by what he called akangaroo court in 23 and deported (from my hometown, New Orleans, in 27). As far as the UNIA went, this snake, was able to slither up the ranks because of his sophistication and ability to be of service to the group. We are so trusting. The lessons for us today are to 1.) always remember that when we start to make our moves the forces against us will make their moves as well, just by going to the FBI site you will see that the all of the first Black agents were hired to break the UNIA , 2.) we have got to keep our organizational books and records super duper tight since there will be race traitors amongst us, and 3.) begging for and/or strong arming Diversity, Inclusion, and Acceptance especially when and where we are not wanted can have disastrous consequences. Everything comes with a price, even Affirmative Action. This may, in fact, be one of the earliest examples of Affirmative Action coming back to bite us in the ass....be careful what you ask (beg) for, you may get more than what you bargained for. And like Garvey taught us, Do for Self. So, our Negro of the Week is James Wormly Jones....read up on him and may his name never be forgotten, he taught us one hell of a lesson.....fbi.gov/news/stories/2011/february/history_021511/history_021511 -Written by Garrick A.
