July 3 2013 PRESS RELEASE NAMRIGHTS PETITION UN SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON RACISM Today NamRights released a special report on the status of the 1965 UN International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination (ICERD) to which Namibia is a State Party. One of the four major objectives of the report is to sound alarm about the rising temperatures of racism in the country as well as to alert the UNs Human Rights Council that Namibia continues to be in serious breach of its obligations under ICERD even after the August 19 2008 UN recommendations that Namibia takes urgent steps to address the volatile race relations in the country. The thrust of the report is that Namibia has continued failing to bring about racial harmony among its 2.3 million strong multi-racial population. The special report, which is an addendum to NamRights’ Shadow Report addressed to the UN in July 2008, is addressed to the UN Special Rapporteur on Contemporary forms of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance as well as the UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of the Judiciary. The Addendum also takes into consideration the recent pronouncements by, among others, the Right Hon Prime Minister Hage Geingob vis-à-vis the alleged racially-motivated attack in Gobabis on June 1 2013. In the discharge of his or her mandate, the UN Special Rapporteur on Contemporary forms of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance transmits communications, such as the present report, on alleged violations regarding contemporary forms of racism, discrimination based on race, xenophobia and related intolerance, to the State concerned (in this case, Namibia), in order to induce the national authority to undertake the necessary investigations of all the incidents or individual cases reported. The full text of the report can be accessed via “News” then “Press Releases” at nshr.org.na
