July 7, 2009 Another day, another patrol, just as if nothing at all out of the ordinary had happened in the past 24 hours. Our four vehicle patrol traveled to the German airfield at 0700 to see our brothers home. Our lost comrades were to be flown home and the entire FOB would be in attendance as honor guard. The German aircraft landed and we proceeded out onto the tarmac. Soldiers formed up on either side of the taxiway and the Fallen were driven onto the airfield by German armored vehicles. The vehicles aligned sharply facing away from the aircraft’s rear loading door. At a signal the first armored vehicle was opened and the first were borne by an honor guard to the aircraft. As each Soldier’s name was announced the assembled rendered present arms. It was a solemn occasion made all the more striking by the dignity with which the German soldiers attended to their duties. We left the airfield and our fellows behind as our mounted combat patrol was bound for the Provincial headquarters. I was in charge of the movement which proceeded to get jacked up beyond all measure. We made it off the plateau Suffice to say and MRAP does not turn on a dime, and Afghan roads are not designed to accommodate gigantic armored vehicles
