July your 4th 1976, Bicentennial Celebration in Claxton. The - TopicsExpress

July your 4th 1976, Bicentennial Celebration in Claxton. The perennial champion Claxton Bank softball team, of which I was a small part, was playing an all star team as part of the festivities. Small problem. Many of us had been at The Coast for a day or two and had to traverse back for the game, odd as it may seem, some of us were not in game condition at game time. I thought it would be hi-damn- larious if Allen Horton and I switched positions about the 3rd inning, he to first and me to centerfield. It gets worse. Upon arriving in centerfield, Mike Smokebomb Hendrix thought it would be neighborly to offer me a Pony Miller whilst I was playing. Who was i to turn down so marvelous a gesture it being the bicentennial and all? The umpire, Who shall remain nameless, saw me with said beer on the field and ejected me from the game. I reacted in a very unseemly manner and the kindness of Smokebombs gesture was soon forgotten. As a result I had to go before Elder Wilmer Lynn and plead for mercy to be reinstated. Bad news is that is not the worst thing I ever did on the 4th. Good news is that I never drank and centerfielded again. The End.
