#JulyComplex Wednesday Morning Update Nick Sablan, logistics section chief trainee for the July Complex, gave an update early this morning to firefighters as they prepared for their day. Date Started: July 31, 2014 Size of Complex: 27,452 acres (Log: 3,280; Whites 24,172) Estimated Date of Containment: Log Fire 8/17/14; Whites Fire 8/30/14 Total Personnel: 1,652 (Log 899; Whites 753) Structures threatened: Residences 753; Commercial 52; Other 610 Committed Resources: 36 crews, 93 engines, 30 dozers , 17 helicopters, 42 water tenders, 4 masticators Fire Weather/Behavior: Today will be cooler with higher humidity and a chance of showers. There is a chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon. Due to today’s expected weather, the fire is not expected to exhibit the long-range spotting and rapid growth shown in the last several days. Operational Objectives: Log Fire-- Keep the fire south of Shackleford Trail, north of Kidder Creek, east of Campbell Lake, and west of Ricky Creek; Whites Fire--Keep the fire north of Forest Road 39 in Sixmile Creek; west of and within the Russian Wilderness boundary; south of the Etna Summit and Taylor Lake Trailhead Road; and east of Jackass Gulch south to Eddy Gulch Road. The Log Fire now totals 3,280 acres after growing 146 acres yesterday and is 28% contained. The California National Guard is working with firefighters to protect threatened communities. The fire continues to burn to the ridgetop north of Kidder Creek and west toward the Marble Mountain Wilderness. Firefighters worked to suppress two new fires resulting from Monday’s lightning in the Marble Mountain Wilderness, west of the Log Fire. Over 33 miles of fireline have been completed on the Log Fire. The Whites Fire now totals 24,172 acres after growing 3,890 acres yesterday, expanding on all perimeters. Today firefighters will continue line construction west across the south flank to Eddy Gulch Lookout and north to tie into Sawyers Bar Road. Fire activity has prompted several evacuation advisories, orders and road closures (see list below). Structure defense continues for the historic mining district and the Rainbow Mine. Structure protection is in place in Idlewild, Robinson Flat, Whites Gulch, Taylor Lake and Sawyers Bar. Whites Gulch Road has been closed. Eddy Gulch Lookout has been evacuated. Structure defense forces are expected to increase as more resources become available. The following Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office evacuation advisories and orders are in effect: Evacuation Orders-- Residents should leave immediately. Evacuation orders are in place for the communities of Sawyers Bar, Eddy Gulch, Little North Fork, Idlewild, Mule Bridge, Robinson Flat and Whites Gulch areas. Once a person leaves, they may not be able to reenter the evacuation area until the fire danger has passed. Exit via Sawyers Bar Rd to Forks of the Salmon and then take Salmon River Rd to Highway 96. There is heavy fire traffic on the Callahan-Cecilville Road. Please avoid this road if possible for your own safety. Expect intermittent closures of Highway 96 between Horse Creek and Doggett Creek. Scott Bar Road to Ft. Jones is still open at this time. Evacuation Advisories--Residents should be prepared to evacuate if fire conditions worsen. An advisory is in place for the communities of Quartz Valley, Mugginsville, Greenview and South Kidder Creek. An advisory is in place for the Scott Valley communities of French Creek and Sugar Creek. A hard closure is in place on the Sawyers Bar Road from east of Sawyers Bar to a point between Etna Summit and Etna. Only firefighting traffic is allowed on the road. National Forest Closure Orders: A number of trail, road and area closure orders have been issued by the Forest Supervisor of the Klamath National Forest for the protection of the public as well as firefighters.
