June 14, 2013 At approximately 7:52am, Thursday, June 13, 2013, Senior Patrolman Jeremy Cox, Patrolman Kurtis Wallace and Patrolman Craig Hahn were in Hammonds Restaurant in the 200 block of East Main Street. The officers were seated next to a male patron, later identified as William L. Ferguson, Jr. (52) of New Albany, IN, at the counter. The officers heard a noise as if something had been dropped on the ground. Cox looked over and observed a handgun on the floor next to Ferguson as he was picking it up. Cox asked the Ferguson if he had a permit to carry the handgun. Ferguson stated that he did. Wallace removed the handgun from Ferguson’s pocket for the safety of everyone in the restaurant. A driver’s license check did not indicate Ferguson had a permit to carry the firearm. Officers placed Ferguson under arrest. During a pat down search officers located containers of a substance that field tested positive for marijuana. Ferguson was transported to the Jefferson County Jail without further incident. Once at the police department, officers asked Major Jeremey Perkins to check the state database and determined Ferguson did not have a permit to carry the weapon. Arrested: William L.
