June 18 will be a special day for rap fans. Pending pushbacks, Kanye West will release arguably the year’s most-anticipated album with his sixth studio solo set titled Yezzus. Also set to arrive on the same date will be the much-hyped sophomore releases by Mac Miller with Watching Movies with the Sound Off and wait for it, J. Cole with his Born Sinner. The North Carolina native, Cole, whose original release date was set for June 25—the same as his Roc Nation compadre and MMG solider Wale with his upcoming The Gifted album—unveiled the new release date and album cover art earlier today via his Instagram account (realcoleworld). All three MCs will be going head-to-head in what’s expected to be an exciting day for hip-hop. “I think competition is good,” says Young Guru, the Roc’s legendary sound maven. “It brings out [each emcee’s] vital parts,” he tells REVOLT. What was initially set to be a one-on-one Roc Nation–styled Sound scan clash between Cole and Wale (who’s managed by the Roc and signed to Rick Ross’ MMG imprint) has now been flipped into a triple threat match-up between two of the game’s championed sophomore rap acts, and of course the “I Am A God” rap behemoth, Mr. West. Miller is already enjoying the competition, as a few weeks back after Kanye sent out that cryptic “June Eighteen” tweet, the Pittsburgh rhymester added the following note to the message, “@KanyeWest: ‘June Eighteen’ appreciate u showin support my g. #salute.” Now, how’s that for wishful thinking. Jumping back to Cole: Guru praised the N.C. native’s transition from rap rookie to rap star. “J. Cole has proven himself through the old way that we used to do it, of really going around and kissing the babies,” he says. “He didn’t have his super-big single, but he sold a lot of records because of the fact that he went into every market and made sure those people knew that he was dope.” The Roc star’s current Miguel-assisted single “Power Trip” currently sits at No. 21 on Billboard’s Hot 100.
