June 30th 1066 Tosti Godwinson sailed from Norway to the Orkney Islands where he receives 17 ships to aid his planned invasion, before sailing on to Scotland to await the arrival of King Harald Hardrada of Norway. Throughout the month of July, William, Duke of Normandy, oversees his own preparations for war at his camp on the Dives River. He holds numerous meetings at Caen with his advisors, and watches as his fleet of ships is built.
