June 4, 1977 - 37 Years Ago Today: Donna Summer debuted on the Billboard 200 chart with her album, I Remember Yesterday. The album supplied a mix of songs of yesteryear to innovative present day disco and electronica, which credits Summer for having the genre go mainstream in 1977. I Remember Yesterday, peaked at No. 18 and was Summers fourth consecutive album in just over 18 months to be certified Gold. The album was fueled by the hit single, I Feel Love, which didnt debut until August 6, 1977 and peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 100 on November 12, 1977. The Summer/Giorgio Moroder/Pete Bellotte-penned single was certified Gold and many credit this mainstream electronica single as the blueprint and inspiration for many electronica artists that followed. I Feel Love cemented Donna Summers status as the leading female artist to conquer the genre of Disco. Upon hearing, I Feel Love, David Bowie had said in an interview at the time that he had heard the future and Donna Summer was it. Of course, the future had greater things in store for Summer. Her next release was her Cinderella-themed double-album opus, Once Upon A Time, which debuted two weeks following the peak position of I Feel Love. The album, I Remember Yesterday (all tracks) spent three weeks at No. 1 on the National Disco Action Top 40 chart which is now titled the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart and was Summers sixth Top Ten and fourth No. 1. Donna Summer was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
