Junk Food “Kind words are like honey—sweet to the taste and good for your health.” Proverbs 16:24 How many of us are junk food junkies? We can’t pass up a burger, fries, soda, chips, chocolate and cake? The only problem with this is that the more junk food we eat, the more we develop a taste for it. It’s a vicious cycle the more we eat it the more we want. But what happens if we decide to quit eating junk food and eat healthy foods like fruit, vegetables, and cut down on the refined sugars? Very often that first apple will taste bitter, not palatable at all. And the vegetables taste bland. Have you ever met someone who confessed to loving God, but battle to read His Word? “I just can’t get into it.” Or “It’s not exciting,” they say. They have had a steady diet of “junk food” — of the things the world offers in terms of entertainment, things that look good, but leave them wanting more. We might get filled up drinking sodas and eating fast food and candy, but there is absolutely no value to those things. In the same way, we can get filled up with parties, TV, books, and movies and find at the end of the day there is absolutely no value to them. Moving from the junk to the good is hard. It takes a retraining of the taste buds, a commitment to staying with what is good and healthy. But look at the Word of God — good words are like honey, sweet to the taste. If you have a steady diet of put-downs, sarcastic comments and snide remarks, the first time you get “honey” in the form of kind words, it can often be overwhelming. The first time you read the Word of God, it can be so foreign to you that it is not exciting. And yet it is those words that save you, and are good for you. Remember your words are not only good for others, but for you. And you can only speak good words when they are seasoned with the Word of God.
