Jury Duty - had my first experience with being called in for Jury - TopicsExpress

Jury Duty - had my first experience with being called in for Jury Duty in the City of Richmond. Had to be there by 8:45 a.m. (not bad since I am usually at work at 7:30). Interesting experience, I now understand the term sentenced to jury duty. Got to sit in a basement room with about 50 other people, the room was dirty, carpets stained, chairs uncomfortable; we were given coffee and water. There was a drink machine and a snack machine in the lobby, but since we didnt know when we would be called upstairs to the court rooms (you can not take food or drinks up there) no-one was purchasing anything. Not to mention it was COLD down in the mushroom pit. We were not allowed to have cell phones, laps tops, electric readers, etc. I had brought a couple of magazines, but had buzzed through them in an hour. They did supply some magazines, old issues of Sports Illustrated, Boomer (yes I qualify, but really....); Richmond Family and a Health Magazine. Around noon, they took half of us upstairs, we all got to sit in a lobby area for another hour. Around 1:00 p.m. we were herded into a small court room where they proceeded to make the jury selection (All the middle aged, dare I say it White women were eliminated) - and yes that included me..... This process took another hour. What really got me was that they called some older people up to the juror area and had them stand during the selection process. Why were people leaning on canes standing for an hour? Around 2:00 they selected the jurors, the rest of us got to go back to the mushroom pit to be told we could leave. Around 2:00 the jurors who were selected got to leave to get themselves lunch, no snacks or lunch had been provided. These folks were going to have to report back after lunch for the trial to start. Seems to me prisoners are probably treated better than jurors, and yes I am thankful that I got to go home. Oh and dont forget they will send you a check in the mail in 6 to 8 weeks for $30.00 - WOW!
