Just Do It By Greg Ebie As parents, it has happened to all of us one way or another. From time to time we give our children rules or instructions to follow, to which they respond with one word or maybe two: Why? How come? We typically say in those moments something we hated to hear as kids ourselves: Because I said so. Thats why! Throughout the Book of Leviticus I can picture the Children of Israel asking, Why do we have to do it that way? To which God lovingly responds, Because I said so. These are the procedures to be followed for every kind of serious skin disease or itch, for mildew or fungus on clothing or in a house, and for a swelling or blister or shiny spot in order to determine when it is unclean and when it is clean. These are the procedures regarding infectious skin diseases and mildew and fungus (Leviticus 14:54-57, The Message). Looking back from our vantage point in salvation history, we can understand why God gave some of the laws and instructions. The sacrificial system pointed toward Jesus; He is the perfect sacrifice to pay the penalty for our sin. Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin (Hebrews 9:22). Jesus, the pure and spotless Lamb of God, became our substitute and bore our sins so we might be forgiven as His blood was poured out for us. Through medical advances we also know that many of Gods laws were given for the health and protection of the nation of Israel. God instructed His people how to recognize diseases and even the sources of various sicknesses. God wanted His children to be free from sickness and disease, so He gave specific instructions for them to follow. Reading through these regulations may seem tedious to us, but we need to remember obedience to Gods laws not only prevented physical contamination, but moral and spiritual infection too. Dont question what God tells you to do. Just do it because Father knows best. — D. Greg Ebie is senior pastor of Life Church (Assemblies of God) in Garrettsville, Ohio, and an author of Daily Bread devotionals.
