Just a Reminder. I am often asked how long it will take to start or retrain a horse. There is no real answer to that question , the horse sets the timeline and proper preparation prevents accidents and sets the horse up to be confident , relaxed and willing. There are many factors that go into it , the horses natural ability to adapt to new things, previous training and handling and the horses temperment. So the only real answer is it takes the time it takes. The horse in this video took 5 1/2 weeks to get to this point that she was properly prepared to be mounted and carry me in a relaxed manner and be calm and willing. While I realize dollars play a big part in peoples lives I do believe that when we look back and think about it , an extra 3 or 4 weeks of training in the early stages to get it right is really a small price to pay in the length of a horses life . The start is the most important time in a horses life and should not be rushed. When ever we do anything with a horse we should take the time it takes to get things right.
