Just a Thought: Whether it is; sharing your faith with the lost or encouraging the spiritual growth of the saved, ultimately it isn’t about winning or losing at all, it’s about the life and death of all. With this in mind we need to check our motives. When we are trying to win the hearts of the lost; why are we doing or not doing it? Some are doing it to save some from themselves and the disaster they see others headed for. Some are doing it to literally put notches on their belts. Others do it for show – “I bring many in; I look good to others.” Some are not trying to win the lost at all. These are selfish motivations and not God honoring ones. Therefore they effort to win the lost is a matter of winning and losing or just not caring at all. Some are trying to change the lives of others because they want them to conform to “their brand of Christianity.” “Why, if folks don’t look like we think they should, talk we think they should and walk like we think they should (in every aspect) something has got to change!” And we mean in them! We can focus so intensely on the outside of folks that we completely neglect the inner man. Some are not as much about making true disciples as much as they are about making clones. These are wrong and selfish motives. This makes every encounter and relationship attempt a win, lose or I don’t care situation. John Maxwell is the first I heard say it, so I suppose it came from him; “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care!” If we are not witnessing to the lost and trying to encourage the saved out of a motivation of love – we are the ones off base and our attempts are in vain! We have to identify with others, love others, go where others are if ever expect to get them to where we are. We have to do as Paul did with those Galatians: “I plead with you, brothers, become like me, for I became like you.” (Gal 4:12) Perhaps we need to be a little less in people’s face and instead go to their place and meet them there with the love of Christ.
