Just a bit of handy advice! Press Release from Dublin City Council (also on behalf of Fingal County Council, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and South Dublin County Council) Water Shut off in Dublin Region to be lifted from tonight - 7th November 2013 Dublin City Council, on behalf of the four Dublin Local Authorities, wishes to announce that due to an increase in production at our Ballymore Eustace Water Treatment Plant, and improvements in storage at our treated water reservoirs, the water shutdowns and severe pressure reductions that have been in place since 30th October 2013, will be lifted from this evening. Dublin City Council, on behalf of the four Dublin Local Authorities, wishes to thank customers across the entire Dublin region for their patience during the period of water restrictions, which we had to put in place over the past week. Due to the cooperation of all water users, we managed to save a significant amount of water and our regional strategic storage, which was at an extremely and unsustainably low level over the past week, has improved. Storage at our treated water reservoirs is currently below the level it would normally be at this time of year. We will be keeping reduced water pressure in place in the evenings over the coming weeks, to gain additional treated water storage. This is normal practice at this time of year. This will enable us to plan ahead for the high demand Christmas season, and to cater for the difficulties that the onset of extremely cold weather at this time of year can bring. Water users should not be impacted by this reduced pressure and all users should receive a return of supply this evening. According to Michael Phillips, Dublin City Engineer, We will continue to review and monitor production at Ballymore Eustace and the levels at our treated water reservoirs on an ongoing basis. We strongly urge consumers all over the Dublin Region to help conserve water by restricting their use of water during the day as much as possible. By making very small adjustments to some of our daily activities, we can help to significantly reduce the volume of water we use without impacting on our lifestyle. I would encourage everyone to visit taptips.ie which provides easy to follow and valuable tips on how to conserve water. If all of our customers implement simple conservation measures, this would also significantly reduce the likelihood of future restrictions being implemented which could arise from extremely cold weather or from issues with water production. Water is Precious, Lets conserve it! Repairs to the 30 Watermain on Swords Main Street Repair to the serious burst on the 30 watermain on Swords Main Street has been completed. Permanent (road) reinstatement of the works area will commence tomorrow morning and it is expected to have Swords Main Street open to traffic by Friday afternoon. The current traffic management plan for the area will remain in place until all works are complete. Picture from https://twitter/fingalcoco Getting rid of Airlocks (from Fingal County Council) Following a disruption to Water Supply some households may get airlocks in their internal plumbing system. The airlock is generally in the hot water system and most likely the result of faulty internal plumbing. This is what to do if you get an air lock:- Firstly make sure all hot taps in the house are in the closed position. Then either proceed with option 1 or 2. Step 3 applies to both. 1. If the hot and cold taps in the kitchen are separate i.e. not combined in a mixer tap, the hot tap should be turned on. If there is an airlock, no water will come from the hot tap. A short length of hose should be used to connect the hot and cold taps in the kitchen only. Turning on the cold tap will result in the cold water being forced through the hot water system and this will force the air which is causing the airlock back into the water tank in the attic. OR 2. If there is a mixer tap in the kitchen, the hot tap should be turned on. With a cloth in your hand (to help reduce water squirting out) block the mixer tap and turn on the cold water tap gently. This should force the cold water back through the hot water system, forcing the air into the water tank in the attic. Care should be exercised when doing this in case of accidental scalding with hot water. 3. Let this run for 1 - 2 minutes, then turn off the cold tap and let the hot tap run for 1 - 2 minutes to confirm that the air lock is cleared. If the air lock is not cleared, repeat the procedure one or two times more. If this is not successful, contact a plumber and get them to correct the problem. In rare cases the cold water taps in wash hand basins or the bath may also be air locked. This procedure will also work for them, but is more difficult as a long length of hose is necessary from the kitchen cold tap to the nearest wash hand basin or bath tap.
