Just a couple of quick things from the quarterly SREC Meeting that took place on Sept 13. I’ll send out a lengthier newsletter later this week. Today’s quarterly meeting was more of an update on Republican Party activities leading up to the November election and organizing the SREC to conduct party business for the 2014-2016 term. We approved the committee selections that Chairman Munisteri announced two weeks ago. I was officially approved as the Chairman of the Party Organization Committee today and I’m blessed to have a great team of SREC members to work with from around the state. The Party Organization Committee is charged with developing, organizing, and coordinating the Republican Party training program for county chairs and precinct chairs throughout the state. We plan to assess the library of training materials then update the materials so they are more intuitive, electronic, user friendly, and integrated with our Republican Party infrastructure. We also plan to study the item in the platform that asks the SREC to study the Utah model for selecting primary candidates and develop a report prior to the next convention. The SREC elected the following members to the Officials Committee today: Jim Wiggins – SD 3; Candy Noble – SD 8; Bonnie Lugo – SD 13; Davida Stike – SD 14; Montie Watkins – SD 15. The Officials Committee handles much of the business matters between the quarterly SREC meetings such as the approval of contracts, developing the annual budget, organizing the state convention, and reviewing certain facets of the candidate filings during the filing period. The major topic of today’s meeting regarded the transparency of the SREC meetings themselves. We had a proposed amendment to the standing rules to allow the meetings to be live-streamed on the internet. I ultimately voted to send this proposed standing rule to the Rules Committee, which I serve on, for deliberation. We need to look at all aspects of this rule to promote transparency without giving away any trade secrets such as candidate funding decisions or victory center operations. I voted for live-streaming of our meetings, other than executive sessions, during the last term, so I am optimistic that we can come to a consensus on the standing rule at the next meeting in December.
