Just a little reminder ... When looking for a puppy, please make sure to only buy from reputable breeders. Breeders who are members of the breed club of their country and comply with that club’s rules and regulations. And that includes health tests. The breed clubs usually have an info page online where you find those rules and also the health tests the club requires. For example, below is some advice from the Southern Newfoundland Club (UK). They even have some very practical check lists. When looking for a breeder, make sure you can tick off every single point on that check list! While every country may have different rules, the basics are the same. All dogs used for breeding should have been health tested for heart, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and cystinuria. And not only the puppies’ parents, but also their parents, and so on. Don’t let a breeder fool you – there is NO EXCUSE not to do any of the health tests! Also, you should verify that if the breeder claims that the health tests were done, they are actually telling the truth. Ask them to show you a copy of the certificates, and/or check their claims online – there are several databases where you can check up on health results. southernnewfoundlandclub.co.uk/puppyadvice.asp UK database: health.thenewfoundlandclub.co.uk/search.php US database: offa.org/
