Over the last few years these guys have: - Worked with the World Federation of the Deaf to ensure the right to use sign language is included in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Successfully lobbied Australian Government to: - Provide funding for a national interpreting service for deaf people attending medical appointments. The service is provided by Wesley Mission Brisbane. - Upgrade the National Relay Service (relays phone calls between deaf and hearing people) to include the ability to use Internet, SMS and video (for using Auslan via an interpreter). The NRS is provided by Australian Communication Exchange. - Include Auslan in early intervention programs for deaf babies and young children. - Include Auslan as a LOTE (Language Other Than English) in the National Curriculum. - Collaborated with other disability groups to lobby government to establish the National Disability Insurance Scheme and make sure Deaf people are eligible for it.
