I have a BA in world history (specializing in the Middle Ages, that period from the fall of the Roman Empire to the Renaissance) and while Ive always known it was a liberal arts degree, I never really stopped to think what the phrase liberal arts means. Liberal is Latin for worthy of a free person. A person with a liberal arts education learns skills and tools to contribute to society; it gives you the tools and skills you need to know in order to take an active part in civic life, to contribute to and expand the scope and knowledge of Mankind.
