Just after 4:00am this morning, Jersey City Police Officer Melvin Santiago was killed in the line of duty when he and his partner responded to a robbery call at a 24 hour Walgreens store. Officer Santiago and his partner had just pulled into the parking lot when the gunman fired multiple times at them. Officer Santiago was sitting in the passengers seat when he was struck in the head by gunfire. The suspect was then killed in a shootout with other officers, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Officer Santiago during this difficult time.
