Just came across this.... Grassmoor is a small village on the outskirts of Chesterfield. The club has been at many locations, at the turn of the century it was played on Wicketfield. Then after the 1st World War it moved to Slipper (Boot and Shoe) field. It was then relocated to Barnes Park- due to better facilities. OUR VILLAGE HERITAGE. We can not boast a village green, No ducks or duckpond can be seen But these are not a cause for bother Just take your ducks to t River Rother. About a hundred years ago, Our cricket club was formed, you know And miners, coming home from work With aching limbs, refused to shirk. They levelled out, as best they could A pitch to play on, then with wood Carved for themselves a home- made bat To buy a ball, went round wit hat. Of course, the game was not yet cricket, For at this time they called it Wicket But something started in those days Right down the years it with us stays. We think of men that played so well, The Bedfords,Godfreys,Meads and well- So many, we could miss a name That all deserve our glad acclaim. The Bedfords still are playing on. The Godfreys, most of them are gone, But Ossy lives, although hes frail We love to listen to his tale... ....of years ago, nostalgic days of lusty bats and winning ways. A heritage like this lasted And we, in turn, the joys have tasted. I think that we could do much worse Than give to Tat a special verse. Hes still around though now too old, To us hes worth his weight in gold. And what to say about the Roes? Theyre worth a mention I suppose. That hold a record it would seem, Five brothers playing in one team! How many times have you read this? What a grand cricketer Ray Dawes is And still bowling on and doing his bit, While Chris, his son, the stumps can hit! The Skellands too, have done their best, Brought to the game both skill and zest. Percy, good bat, clever spin, Now his son Tony, can hit and stay in. But we must think of those to follow, The players of the new tomorrow, And guard the game we love so dear, Make sure the club continues here. We have to say, Weve done our best, Built a pavilion with great zest. We look with pride at what weve done For Grassmoor, and each future son. So come on kids! Youre still at school, Remember this and learn the rule. When were too old and cant bat on, We look to you to follow on. written by D.Roe (1984)
