Just completed an hour long web class with WebYeshiva.org, taught by Rabbi Dovid Fink, about Drachei Shalom (the way of peace.) The basic verse was: Prov. 3:17 - Her ways are ways of pleasantness and all her paths are peace. - The teacher spoke about how acting in ways that promote peace sometimes overrode other concerns. This was the class description: Darkhei Shalom (the ways of peace) is a Talmudic principle that teaches us how to interact with our fellow man. In this series, we wall examine the principle passages in Rabbinic literature that use this principle in practical applications. The link provides the Hebrew sources. In class we will translate and explain these sources. The teacher noted that we had to keep in mind the context of the writings, medieval Spain, a precarious time fraught with danger that could be unleashed easily and quickly. However, the larger principle is still valid, that seeking peace with our fellow man carries great weight, and that expressing Gods mercy and compassion takes precedence over other issues. This makes me realize how important it is to pursue peace. Now, I dont think that means giving up your backbone and becoming weak and cowardly in regard to standing up for things that are important. I am looking forward to the rest of the course.
