Just finished Donna Tartts The Goldfinch (1) It could be 100 pages shorter, with some of the drug stuff as part of the edit. (2) Theres some powerful pain being worked through. (3) She wanders off-track at places, almost as far as Mervyn Peake in the third volume of The Gormenghast Trilogy, which has so little to do with the first two volumes that its surprising they can drag it into a trilogy setting. (4) She launches into sentences that at least bend grammatical rules, stringing out descriptive phrases until the moon turns blue, sounding like Thomas Pynchon is one of his fiercest rants, even reminding me of Allen Drury (Advise and Consent) at his finest, in whose honor several of us, in Mrs. Spetchs 9th grade English class, wrote a two-page, single-spaced, typewritten sentence which was, more or less, grammatically correct and which we were allowed to duplicate on colored paper and share with the class. Howd I do in #4 there? (5) Kvetch. kvetch. Long but interesting. I liked The Secret History better but only because I read it first.
