Just finished reading “The Discovery of America by the Turks” - TopicsExpress

Just finished reading “The Discovery of America by the Turks” by Jorge Amado. An amazing slim piece of work, translated for the first time in English, by one of the most popular modernist Brazilian writers. The text was so captivating that I could not part with it since I started reading the piece, yesterday. Never have I read such a fiction that mesmerized me to that extent, for its blending of satire with humor intractably, to present a mundane, ribald, yet a great humane saga of the Brazilian multitudes, of its people. I must say, reading Amado was an experience that defies any word. Amado reminds me of Vargas Illosa, yet he goes further than Illosa, in creating humorously picaresque scene. Humor for Amado is device to portray seriousness of life in lighter vein.
