Just finished readying The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri. I am a big admirer of her work. Unaccustomed earth will stay my favorite of her books but reading The Lowland i was especially interested in her portrayal of Gaury, and her selfishness and cruelty as a mother. While as a reader its hard to relate to Gaurys character and what she has caused her daughter Bella, as an artist i have so much appreciation for Ms. Lahiri for dealing with the complex issue of flawed and damaged motherhood, when finding ones own identity clashes with the ability to give yourself to motherhood, when the strong mothers love that supposed to happen when we become mothers, maybe the greatest love possible, is partly, or not at all there. My own mother, a loving and devoted yet intense and complex, was and is a big inspiration for my own work, her many faces as a mother, a woman, the person that she is. I am including some images I took of her and of the both of us.
