Just finished speaking with a man at the hardware store. As happens sometimes with me we began discussing federal drug policy. He went on a rant about legalizing marijuana, the government conspiracy to control hemp, and the amazing health benefits of hemp. Being tangentially familiar with many of these claims, I told him that I agreed with legalization and that hemp should be used for industrial applications but that I was unaware of any scientific studies that showed hemp cured anything. His response was to get very boisterous, but not aggressive, running down a (mostly) incoherent laundry list of complaints about the government killing people who have discovered the benefits of hemp and that they want people sick to keep the medical-industrial complex functioning, etc. I smiled politely and asked how he had learned about all of these benefits if the government was covering it up. His response YouTube and good Internet research. I decided it wasnt appropriate to laugh in his face and so told him Id have to look it all up. I am now willing to entertain the thought that the hemp movement, like the naturopath movement, is a religion.
