Just for the fun of it: The Colorado and Washington chapters of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) have made a bet on the upcoming Super Bowl between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks. NORML released a statement announcing the wager: “Bud Bowl. Weed Bowl. Fill a Bowl. Stoner Bowl. Super Stupor Bowl. Whatever you call it, the teams from Denver and Seattle are in it to win it! And so are cannabis consumers!” The competing NORML chapters will not be betting buds. Instead they have a more light-hearted payout in mind. If the Peyton Manning-lead Broncos emerge victorious, Washington NORML members will don Denver jerseys and sing Colorado’s cannabis anthem, “Rocky Mountain High,” by the late great John Denver. And if Seattle takes the title, Colorado NORML must wear Seahawks gear and sing “Purple Haze” by legendary Seattleite Jimi Hendrix. The Karaoke performance from the losing side will be featured on both groups’ Facebook pages following the game. In addition to the jovial nature of the wager, NORML is taking this opportunity to advocate medical marijuana for pain treatment in the NFL. Pot has the potential to protect the brain against the long-term damage associated with concussions – a major concern that threatens the sustainability of America’s most popular sport. NORML summed it up aptly: “So while we celebrate this historic Super Doobie Bowl … let’s not forget those players on and off the field whose employers will not allow them to consume a legal substance that has never had an associated death in all of recorded history.”
