Just found an article that Atlantic City is planning an "Italian-style" horse race on the the beach around Columbus day. They are expecting upwards of 50 horses to compete with "jockeys" riding bareback in the deep, soft sand of the beach. Unless your horse is used to this type of surface, leg injuries to the horses are a given. I believe that this type of event will turn out to be just a free for all with a bunch of whooped up cowboys going for the win instead of caring about the welfare of the horses involved.
