Just got back from interviewing my Provincetown buddy John Waters for the next issue of FourTwoNine magazine about his new book Carsick, which is about hitchhiking across America from his home in Baltimore to his apartment atop Nob Hill in San Francisco. It is a remarkably funny and even touching and wise book that ends up being about his profound love for this country and the people who live in it. And, yes, its got some filthy stuff in there too. This will be Johns 50th summer living in Provincetown he told me this afternoon at his apartment on 12th Street here in New York. Provincetown, to those of us who love it, is Our Own Private Mayberry. John has gone from being a kind of teenage Opie there to being its Andy Taylor for decades. He sees himself as a filth elder these days - his own designation - but I see him as a kind of Aunt Bee whos still got her sting. I love the guy. Our mutual friend, the great photographer Henny Garfunkel, is going to photograph him for the story up in Provincetown. Watch for it all in September in FourTwoNine.
