Just got back from seeing Gravity. Its a re-birth story - heavy on the imagery and metaphors - overlaid with a hoary damsel in distress one in which the damsel, as shes surrendering to her fate, is rescued by a man whos already dead for Godsakes. The feminist angle I thought the film was aiming for sort of went out the module hatch at that moment. I thought Bullock - Botox and all - was fine and found, ironically, every subtle wrinkle in the emotions of her character although it bothered me her hair stayed stuck to her head when I thought it would be floating about it a bit more in space. Also that final speech about the Clooney character meeting her angelic daughter and giving her a message from her had me rolling my eyes and I felt that Bullock herself had to contain herself from rolling hers and keep from laughing at it, but that itself sort of cut through the awful mawkish quality of it and almost made it work. I kept picturing her having trouble getting through a take having to recite those lines without complaining or laughing at them. The filmmaking was incredible to watch even though Im not a fan of 3D and just find it a gimmick to get a couple of more dollars from each audience member. I was happy to see that David Heyman produced it although hes certainly made enough money off his Harry Potter films. I first met him when he was still wet-behind-the-ears and working for his father John back in the mid-1980s when I was working at Paramount Pictures as a highfalutin factotum. Wed often have lunch and hed tell me his dreams of being a big-time producer. Id tell him mine about being writer. His dreams came true in much bigger ways than mine but Ill always have a soft spot in my heart for him. I sure had a crush on him back then. An unrequited one, alas. Im very happy for his success. And glad Gravity is another hit for him.
