Just got finished walking the Stations of the Cross in the neighborhood with with the 15 (!) youth who are sitting Vigil at Messiah tonight. The baptismal reflecting pool that I built was an incredible success. Whereas in previous years I had to practically beg people to let me wash their feet, tonight about 90% of the folks took a turn being washed and washing. Many, many touching moments and combinations and configurations of agape tenderness were revealed. Kids washing parents. Strangers holding hands to help across the slippery parts. Henry went through the cycle two or three times. I sat back and watched amazed at what happens when people are invited to love each other. After we cleaned up from the service the teenagers were playing in the water, encountering it on their own terms, We should do this more often, one said. Indeed.
