Just got this in an email. Felt it was something that really needs to be passed along ASAP! Senate Bill 16 is sturctured to shift the way in which state funding for elementary and secondary education monies are distributed. Currently, money is distributed equally per student across the state. For those community such as Crystal Lake, that have chosen to even further invest in our person student allocation money, will be shifted away from our districts into others such as Chicago/Cook County and downstate Illinois. These areas have chosen to keep a lower school tax and not invest in their school system as we have. So what does that mean? It means that McHenry County stands to lose $18 million in school funds. D47 will lose $5.6 million alone. This bill in its current form is NOT a good bill. It will have a significant impact on our tax dollars and jepordize the quality of and programs in our school system. PLEASE HELP. It will take less than 5 minutes but it can make a huge impact on your school system and tax bill. Our local legislators are strongly opposed to this bill but need your help in stopping it in the House as it has already passed through the Senate. On Representative Barb Wheelers website barbarawheeler.org you can find information on how to fill out a witness slip and voice your opposition. I have also copied the instructions below. However, this needs to be done by Monday, November 17 as the Joint Appropriations Committee of Elementary and Secondary Education is on Tuesday afternoon. Currently 700 slips have been submitted and Barb indicated that to make a statewide impact you need at least 5000! YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! Please follow the instructions below to voice your opposition to Senate Bill 16 and PLEASE PASS THIS EMAIL ALONG TO AT LEAST 5 OTHERS IN ILLINOIS that are concerned about their tax dollars and quality of their school system. Citizens may provide testimony by following these steps: 1. Go to ilga.gov 2. Scroll down the page and click on GA Dashboard (in red ink along the left side of the page) 3. Click on the Register icon and fill in your information (registration is recommended but not required) ***Note that in the space stating firm, represents, and title you may put not applicable, your school name, taxpayer, etc. Anything is fine but you will not be able to get through the screen without something in these blanks. 4. Click on House, Committee Hearings, and then on the “Month” tab 5. Click on the piece of paper icon to the right of the listed hearing (November 18th, Appropriations- Elementary & Secondary Education) 6. Click on Create witness slip 7. Fill out the form 8. In the “subject matter” portion click “opponent” 9. Under “Testimony” you can have your written comments supplied to all board members. This is optional. Interestingly, they do not accept emailed testimony. You may fax your written statement to 217-557-2165 or you may mail it to Illinois State House, Room 426, 401 S. Second Street, Springfield, IL 62706. Make sure that your written testimony is clearly marked at the top of the page: SB16 Testimony, and your name. 10. Fill in verification code 11.
