Just got word of the PA-46 crash near Truckee Tahoe Airport. The actual impact was on or near a mountain peak about 8 miles to the east of the airport. The Piper PA-46 is a single-engine, low-wing, cabin-class aircraft which can carry six people (on a good day...) It has the Big Lycoming Reciprocating Engine that cranks out lots of turbocharged horsepower, and the cabin is pressurized. There were two persons onboard: a man and a woman. The woman, unfortunately, was killed (In fact, her body is still in the wreckage) The man survived with critical injuries. News coverage is spotty at best, so Ill have to await the FAA Preliminary Data entry to glean more information. The flight may not have been bound for Truckee. In fact, there are two more possibilities, but that is pure speculation. Judging from the departure point (Santa Ana) I would guess they may have been bound for Reno or South Lake Tahoe. However, if theres one thing Ive learned about this avocation after decades of guessing, its that you shouldnt guess....
