Just had four jets in formation fly overhead of our suburb...11am Anzac Day. Lest we Forget. Anzac Day is a very important day for Australians. It is a day when there are many marches and memorial services at cities and towns throughout the country. New Zealanders also participated in that battle and fought side by side with Australians, and together they became known as Anzacs – Australian and New Zealand Army Corp. For us it is a national day of serious remembrance of the various wars in which Australians and others have died or been injured, of their families. Lest We Forget refers to not only the memory of the lost, but also of the horrors of war and the need to ever secure the peace. Although there are many battle fields on which Australians have died, in Europe (particularly on the equally horrific frontlines of France) and Asia and the Middle East, the battle field of Gallipoli is the central symbol of it all. There, cast into an awful situation on the coast of Turkey that eventually meant evacuation months later and was an actual defeat, it was marked by such heroism and commitment to each other that it lives on as a legend. Like all legends, truths are misty and our young country has few, but this is, for good or ill, one of our most sacred. At that point and place in our history, Australians feel they truly spilt their blood as a new nation, a few years after Federation of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901, fighting an honorable and equally courageous enemy (Turkey), caught up in the particular awfulness of WW1. There are many inspirational stories from that battlefield and nine Victoria Crosses, our highest military honor, were awarded there. Here is some of those stories: awm.gov.au/exhibitions/bravemen/detail.asp
