Just had to repost this note from Derek Halpern at Social Triggers. What do you think? Derek Says: People will always make snap judgments about what you do. Theyll base those snap judgments on superficial things - like what youre wearing, how high or low your voice is, or something like that. (I actually had someone tell me that I should work on talking in a deeper voice. They hated my current voice, and if I learned to speak in a deeper voice I would sound more authoritative). The best part about this is this: When people make those superficial judgments, the only person theyre hurting is themselves. Theyll limit themselves from getting the advice and training they need, successfully keeping themselves locked into the status quo. But I recently read a quote from a financial blogger named Erin, from Red Debted Stepchild (nice blog name btw), and I LOVE it. She said: Derek Halpern is an interesting character. I had heard a lot of things about him (mostly bad) going into his talk, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Apparently, the beef with him is that he is loud and obnoxious... And it turns out, after seeing him speak and then going through several of his YouTube videos, I like Derek Halpern. This could be slightly biased as he turned down his speaking fee in order to give us an open bar after party. You know why I love this quote? Aside from the fact that its laced with compliments, it shows that she wanted to make up her mind for herself. But theres also one more lesson here: You can love or hate the messenger, but how you feel about the messenger rarely correlates with how much their content can help you. So, no matter whether you like or dislike someone who has something of value to offer, you should always, at the very least, try to figure out what you can learn from them.
