Just imagine….. Your life is content… You have a home in which to build a foundation of love… Children tugging and pulling on you saying, Mommy, Mommy… Your pets roaming through your yard, barking at the strangers who pass by….For that moment in time, you think to yourself, life is good! Then suddenly, everything changes. That home and property that once built a foundation for love is now contaminated with toxins. Your children are now exposed. Your pets become ill with cancer. Your quest for answers begins……. You begin calling upon everyone and anyone whom you feel can help you. Calls are made to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the P.A. Department of Environmental Protection because they were created to assist in just this type of scenario. To your dismay, Representatives from the Agencies tell you nothing is wrong. You have feelings of confusion, anger, disappointment. You ask yourself one simple question, Why? Through research and speaking with others, you learn that not only have your worst fears come true but those Agencies created to assist you have only lied to you, hindered your ability to seek the truth and left you, your family and your entire community exposed to toxins. In fact, research findings may have even provided clues on why Lackawanna County tops the list for having certain cancer rates the highest out of the whole United States. No, this is not some fictional story, it has been my cross to bare for the past several years. My story is not unique, in fact, it is unfortunate that similar stories have and continue to impact far too many communities across the U.S. In order to properly address our concerns regarding the effectiveness of the implemented remedy at the Marjol Battery Site, myself, along with other concerned community members, established Concerned Citizens for the Environment of Throop, PA. Inc., a nonprofit organization incorporated under the laws of Pennsylvania and Section 501 (c) (3) of the Federal Internal Revenue Code. Our expressed intention and quintessential purpose of our organization is to engage in activities, including dissemination of all information to benefit the public concern and protect the environment of Throop, Pa. and surrounding communities. Our main goals consists of providing public awareness to these issues, provide public oversight and advocacy for environmental issues related to communities and provide an open dialogue with governing agencies who can address our concerns. Fortunate for us, C.C.E.T has been provided an opportunity to address and been granted consideration to become professionally involved with Robert J. Martin, former EPA National Ombudsman for Hazardous and Solid Waste for the EPA. Unlike my story, former EPA National Ombudsman Martin’s story is very unique. For nearly ten years, as Ombudsman, whose true independent nature empowered many American communities to make changes necessary to protect human health and the environment. Communities all across the United States came to rely upon an independent EPA Ombudsman function. Many of those same communities have suffered a great loss following his resignation. A true American hero whose resignation speaks volumes as to his unwillingness to cooperate in a lie that would have compromised the relationship of trust he developed with many American communities, including Throop. Once it was clear that the Ombudsman function would be eliminated in a planned transfer of the Ombudsman function to the Office of the Inspector General, Mr. Martin resigned as National Ombudsman on April 22, 2002. Prior to his resignation, Mr. Martin responded to the concerns from the Pennsylvania Delegation, Throop Borough elected leaders and community members. Now, twelve years later and still impacted by the contamination of the former Marjol Battery and Equipment Company, Mr. Martin has responded to our request for assistance. Honored by his response, I now turn to my family, friends, Facebook friends, Throop community and surrounding communities to assist C.C.E.T. in funding Mr. Martin’s return to Throop, PA. Your tax deductible donation will help support his professional services. Your contributions may be sent to Concerned Citizens for the Environment of Throop, Inc., P.O. Box 376, Scranton, PA. 18512, or through the PayPal button on our web page located at concernedcitizensofthroop Please join us on Concerned Citizens of Throop’s Facebook page, show your support and read the very important Disclosures to become knowledgable of the circumstances we are faced with here in Throop, and surrounding communities.
