Just like that. I smoked for over 20 years. 24 years to be - TopicsExpress

Just like that. I smoked for over 20 years. 24 years to be precise. Slowly going from a cigarette a day to 35 to 40 cigarettes a day. During this time, like all smokers, I did think of giving up a couple of times but never really tried. In the last week of December 2010, I decided to finally quit and picked 31st as the date. Importantly, I told myself I’ll quit only for a day and then repeat that everyday. I also told myself that I will not make a big deal of it. No nicotine patch or nicotine chewing gum to assist me in my fight. I’ll take the withdrawal monster on bare handed and attack it when it’s least expecting me. As someone said, clouds go away only when you stop wishing they go away. I decided I’ll quit without a fuss. Just like that. I was bringing in the new year at a friend’s place. I smoked at the party and fully enjoyed all the cigarettes I smoked. When I got back home my ‘last’ packet of cigarettes still had around 6 cigarettes left. I made myself a drink and proceeded to finish 4 out of those 6 cigarettes in the next one hour. Next day was tough. Really tough. But I was prepared. Played it hour by hour and somehow got through the day. Next day I quit for one more day. Today, it’s 4 years to the day since I last touched a cigarette. I guess whether you are planing to quit smoking or thinking of hitting the gym, setting to write a book, go on a diet or whatever you are resolving to do in the new year, don’t make a big deal of it. The more importance you give it, the more elusive and hard to achieve your pursuit will become. Attack it when it’s least expecting you. Just like that. May we achieve all we set out for in the new year. Have a wonderful 2015 everyone.
