Just listening to Radio 3 and heard the most ponderous version of the Rosenkavalier Trio that Ive ever heard. (I mention no names.) The trio is about the surprisingly clear-eyed end of a love affair, not the end of the world. When did slow become automatically equated with profound? I have this theory that its post-Karajan, though he managed to pull off slow tempi. Its illuminating to hear Strauss himself conducting an orchestral version of the trio - OK, maybe he needed to fit it onto a 78, but it works so much better at a flowing pace. (Presumably it helps the singers too. Must be murderous at Grave molto sostenuto!) youtube/watch?v=pV5n6GqgLs0
