Just out of curiosity: Does anyone have any experience with HEVC (sometimes called h265)? Id heard of it but hadnt actually done anything with it. We were watching The Fall on Netflix but the episodes so far of the latest season arent up yet - so when searching for season 2 I found 720p episodes in HEVC... It was genuinely *baffling* that an hour long TV show in 720p could be 180 megs unless the quality was utter shite - but it looks *pristine*. I havent encoded anything in it yet, but am probably going to give it a try soon - my understanding is that encoding takes an incredibly long time... and right now, playback is hard to come by as well. VLC 2.2 supports it but Ive had major issues trying to scrub through a video or go to a specific time, but VLC 3.0 beta has pretty decent seeking (though it seems to get the overall length wrong). Just curious if anybody else has experimented with it - I think its still a ways out before wed be using it for anything, but at such a low data rate for this level of quality, it seems like a really solid contender for a few applications I can think of once playback and encoding is a little more widely available.
