Just over a year ago, I interviewed Mary Burke, after her campaign reached out to me, a lowly blogger, in an attempt to connect with the grassroots people and groups around the state. Since then, she also took time to sit around the kitchen table at a SPARC meeting, and answer all the (really tough) questions we had. At the time, many of us were on the fence - we didnt know much about her and we werent sure where she stood on the issues that mattered most. Some of us were downright skeptical, and a handful even slightly hostile. I had the opportunity to ask more questions when I sat on a panel last month with Mary and Lily Eskelsen García of the NEA, and Ive been following this race more closely than is probably healthy. But the end result is that Ive had the chance to get to know Mary Burke. Shes come a long way as a candidate, but she hasnt moved an inch as a person: shes the same careful, thoughtful, serious, compassionate, interested person she was then, and shes exactly the opposite of the career politician currently holding the office Wisconsin deserves her to hold. I dont agree with her on every issue, but thats much preferred to not agreeing with her on ANY issue, and being insulted to boot, which has been the embarrassing norm under the Walker administration. We need a governor who will work to unite, not divide, and who will work to put people instead of politics first. Walker wont even agree to serve a full term, hes so bent on running for president. Mary Burke just wants to fix what hes broken. Just seeing the way her campaign reached out to the grassroots groups that have been organizing all over the state since 2011 speaks volumes. Its about people. Not politics. Its about education funding, healthcare, jobs. People. Please vote Mary Burke today. Polls are open 7am to 8pm.
