Just reactivated my Facebook page just for the topic of testing in schools. I was a highly effective elementary and middle school teacher with 15 years experience who quit teaching because of the excessive and damaging emphasis on test scores vs. authentic learning. The imbalance in learning brought on by NCLB is a huge disservice to our nations young people in public schools. As a staff we were actually told to forego science and social studies instruction in order to spend more time on math and reading because the science and social studies sections of the test did not count towards our schools testing/accountability rating. Teachers who spoke up against these practices were looked upon as not team players or not performing their jobs with fidelity or integrity. Teaching turned into something that was so far from what I signed on to do that I felt had to leave in order to preserve my own sense of integrity in what I was being asked to do in the classroom on a daily basis. Bravo to Susan Sluyter for standing up for what is right for children and their education.
